University of Minnesota
This one seems to be also esthetic preference. The brick usage and bridge are similar to the RL university.

Buildings and plants scattered in the green. It provides good atmosphere of real universities in the USA.

A kind of open space, and a sign for under construction. Also it could be so in the RL campus. I did not see how the activity here is (or was).

HBMeU
His Highness Sheikh Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai and the President of Hamdan Bin Mohammed e-University (HBMeU), officially launched the HBMeU on February 1, 2009. The HBMeU is the first online institution to be licensed and recognized by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in the United Arab Emirates and among the few in the region.

As a late comer in the golden age of SL universities, it has a full-blown dignity.

The campus with beach and palm trees. Universities in RL Dubai seem to have clean environment with a lot of water and nature. There are many famous universities have gained ground in Dubai that has been aiming at a hub of higher education.

Comparing with the grandest target toward higher online education written on the board, they are using only one SIM, and although there is beautiful atmospheric effect but no special facility or idea for education. But it is nice to see the nightscape and a cute camel.

U of Tasmania
On an island at the south end of Australia. The symbol of the university could be the lion, but the building does not look the part.
University of Tasmania: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Pandani/181/131/44

Many eyes glower at me when entering the house. The panel showed the task of the university, “The widespread investigation and adoption of Second Life as a serious educational platform”.

There is a type of a class room, but there is the flag of America for some reason.

Contrasting one is Munster University that has very similar appearance as the RL building. This is situated next to the Berlin SIM that I visited before. There are outdoor panel exhibitions, but the activities seem like two years old. It may be in year 2009 or so when SL universities were active.

U of South Florida
A university built on sea shore looks adequate as that in Florida. It looks like rather a beach resort than a university.
University of South Florida: http://slurl.com/secondlife/USF/202/231/30

Some suitable gadgets are scattered there, but it feels that pleasure will do everything.

There is a kind of class room, but the inside is like a kindergarten. There is a pose ball set on the step outside for two students, where one consoles another saying that, “Do not cay baby, it is OK”. What made her cry? My uncle professor said that class room today in university is a kindergarten. By any chance, were they crying because of their disappointment in the collage?

Robert E. Cook Honors College
There are many kinds of universities in the SL, from the one only with a building, to a class room where real lesson will be done, PR for the real university, or a recruit center for real work. The most popular ones will be ones with a certain campus and tutorial for SL newbie with a large sand box. This is Robert E. Cook Honors College, in RL located at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, U.S.A. A half of the SIM is used as a sand box. The red signs are for no-no issues in SL.
Robert E Cook Collage: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Whitmyre/129/126/22

Simple building practical-minded as one for SL, but there are neat class rooms and also many rooms like a dorm.

Different from the simple appearance, the inside is well manufactured. There are class rooms behind the doors.

Like a student’s hall. It could be nice to chat here together. May be because of the time difference, but it seems like that this is not used often.

Universities
Searched with a word university and surprisingly hit more than several hundred of places named so in the SL. Unfortunately there is few in Japan. Let me start from Northern Europe, University of Southern Denmark.
USD: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Bifrost/80/181/27

Simple interior based on straight lines as my image of Northern Europe.

Chairs in the school room are also well designed. It could be nice to sit on even in the real life.

The lounge looks like that in a museum. Very lavish use of space. There are panels explaining policy and activities of this university, saying “Beyond the dollhouse, providing a unique educational environment”. There is also a project to stimulate and awaken curiosity with regard to philosophy. I would love to know how these objects were achieved for the past two years.

A space named as ‘White room of visual disorientation’. Photographer Mizuki used this technique in her gallery. On the below, I am standing just in from of the red chair. Since it is three dimensional, it is not easy to walk to the red chair.

Also they said, “Although the detailed knowledge of functionalities within SL may become obsolete with the eventual development of other open access platforms for virtual reality, the know-how and experience regarding virtual existence will not.” By the way, they used acronym AVATAR for Added Value of teAching in a virTuAl Reality, but I think it could be better for Added Value of Advanced Teaching in Artificial Reality.
