Beautiful Go Players

The second Go tournament is now on. This is Ayamichi, the champion without losing a sigle match.
I thought that the avatar cannot match the real person, but Ayamichi and Amber the former champion are so beautiful!
In Japan, there were some expressions for beauty, “like a doll” or “egg with facial features”, but “like an avatar” could be added in the future.

The left is Averil, a realistic child. The right is ILguy, a fighter from the windy city in the state of Illinois, four straight wins!
A good thing of Go is to be able to do a battle even between such different character.
Averil is also a chess player listed in the Chess ranking board.

Some male avatars are a bit scary. The left is Evan, a creator participated in the SL birthday events.
The right is Domino with a cool mesh head. Both of them play gentle games for all that appearance.

There is big evolution in avatar appearance, but not sufficient facial expression yet.
The left is PhilippPhoenix, my chess mentor, at the top level in the Chess ranking.
The right is Ghisleine, newly attended this time, but looks sad because the result was not satisfactory?

Both of them were in the previous tournament but not this time.
The right is Frestita, the left, Kahina who was watching all games. Beautiful two, please join next time!

Also the observers, the left is Piotr, a chess player but plays Go too.
The right is EZDawn, who once made the Go board by herself. Both of them play Go well,

It is fun to watch various costumes. At the Chess site, the left is Averil, the right, Soosanne, good contrast!
There are many games provided here, Chess, Go, Gomoku、Backgammon, Berserker, Poker, etc.

Last time I wore formal wears, but this time, used battle suits such as cyber, future, or female Samurai, but I lost::
The right is Ghisleine, she said a rich Russian for a party with a champagne glass.
There are white and black stones for Go game on her hat. Please come to play Go with worldwide cool players.

Go Tournament 2

The next Go tournament will start on March 11, with 18 players from all over the world, but only me from Japan ;; The other day in a practice game with Returnbook, black was me, a very strange shape was made. The white stones with red dots are all dead, but the rare situation is that there is no stone on the half of the board to this stage.

The reason of this rare result was my strange opening, which is called “Tiger”, a new pattern affected by AI. Returnbook kindly accepted it without hesitation. As show in the right picture, I made a mistake in the response and the top right corner ended up with a terrible shape, but I calmed down and made an approach move 1, but he soon made an invasion of 2.

I somehow managed to make containment, the black group was Seki. The left is when white made a peep A, to let black connect on B, but black did not follow and a new battle started. The right was on the way when black played C, intending to attack either red or blue group of white.

The left is the end stage of the battle attacking blue group above, white played on A to start Ko. Black can play on B to capture one stone, and white could return by C, but as the rule, it cannot be done immediately and both should play other places once. So, both will play Ko-threat that forces the opponent respond. The right is the end of Ko, where white played 1, threatening to capture black stones with yellow dots, but black did not respond and finished the Ko by 2, then white played on 3.

If the yellow dots in the above picture were captured, black will lose, so black tried hard to escape. The left is the stage where black escaped to the top area and attached A, intending three aims, to let the yellow dots stone escape, to make eyes on the left of A, and to narrow the white territory. In the right, white responded B, the surrounded area became false eyes and the all red-dots are dead. If white disregarded B and expanded the area by C or anything, both would be alive and white would lead a lot in the left half area. Thank you Returnbook for accepting and playing such a strange opening!

Affected by AI, now there are many new opening patterns, such as Black Hole, Southern Cross, Spider Web, or Great Wall. Different from Chess or Shogi where almost all openings were already studied, there will be more free possibility in Go, that is why I love it. Isn’t that great to be able to put stones on anyplace you want in such a wide board? There are always some free games in the tournament area, please visit!

Go Tournament

There was a Go tournament recently with 16 attendants from all over the world. I have never heard the system, McMahon tournament. It is a bit like the Sumo tournament in Japan which has a ranking board and the players at the similar level will play, five games each to find who gets the most point. The difference from Sumo is that the ranking seems to be changed after every round. Anyway, the most winner will be the champion. There is no player from Japan and I was ranked as the second strong player group,

Amber from Turkey, the champion. I played with her and was leading until the last stage but she caught up nicely during the final process. I ended up with 2-3, so my ranking will be down next time ;;

The left is Phillip1882, the organizer of this event. I played a practice game once but there was no chance to win, so I tried a mirror game, which will play symmetrically to the opponent play. If it is done to the end, the copier will lose, so it is important to find where to stop. The person who is copied will play at the center where it causes disadvantage to make mirror image and start a local battle. Both players will keep considering the center area. I successfully introduced a rough battle in the air. but Phillip managed it better than me. The right is Returnbook, who was the highest ranking. I played at the first round and won by his mistake at the middle stage.

The left is KahinaRyba I played at the final round. I was leading until the final stage, but she found a hard coup that turned the game over. I have played with her before and my note said “Stay alert!”, but I forgot to read it ;; The right is Dulcis, I played on the second round and barely won. This time was the initial match.

The left is Ayamichi, I played several times but not in this tournament. A cute from China, with the elf-ear covered with the head phone? The right is Soosanne, also I had no chance to play, but I might be pushed away by the countenance before starting a game^-^

The left is Colonel, who was watching my loosing game, and since I looked so pitiful in losing a winning game, he kindly invited me to a dance. The right is Alexander who I had no chance to play since he was in the different level. But he got 3-2 result that is better than me! There were more players who I had no chance to play this time, or did not meet due to the time difference. Phillip1882, thank you so much for organizing the nice event. Looking forward to the next time!

Addition: Recently I was taking many photos of beautiful avatars, but I never took my own face except for experiment or explanation, so challenged beauty shots of myself, but there was no way I can. Eyes have unpleasant looks, nose not cute, mouth provoking…. No choice since the skin is “Strong Face” and the shape is my own more than 10 years old. I might find some petit surgery or new skin….

Let's play Go, again

The left is the stone used for the Japanese national treasure Go board, made with ivory and painted black and red. The right is one of a kind that is used now, green stones said to be easy on the eyes. But they look like beans and I would not play with them.

This is the national treasure board. The battle on the board is using the new pattern "Black Hole", the four stones at the middle, developed by a professional. It is beautiful, but the surface looks harder than a wooden board and a stone put on the edge seems to be unstable. This is not for practical use but for adornment?

I have played with about 40 players in SL so far. There were various levels from beginners to 7-Dan that is very strong. About 10 of them were stronger than me, so I might be in a middle or a bit higher. But now there is only one spot for the game, and a few steady players. The below is February 2015, nobody shown in here comes now. Current players are from the US, Canada, Mexico or Brazil. Sorry that the time zones are different. I would like to see Japanese players. Please join!

To people who does not know what Go is, here is my interpretation. Many people know that Go is to enclose as large area as possible. The area is made by building walls with a series of stakes(stones), but the wall cannot be made at a time since both sides play alternatively. A single stake cannot claim an area, so it is important to arrange stones properly. If there is too wide gap, the opponent will invade. Also, it is a tactic to set a stake close to that of opponent to block up, or to pull out opponent’s stakes by surrounding them. In order to protect stakes from pulled-out (killed), it is necessary to build a house with at least two rooms (eyes) inside. The below shows the end of a game, where I painted the white area red and black green. You can see a big white area at the right below, and white invaded the left above black area like roots of a tree. White is winning this game.

How to set stakes appropriately at the beginning is called Fuseki (stepping stones), and typical ways to negotiate opponent stakes is called Joseki (set sequence). There are some recommended patterns but it is free to set stones anyplace you like. There are new patterns recently developed, the left is called “Tiger”, the right, “Spider Web”. I tried the Tiger and got a good result, but I have no confidence to use the Spider yet. Although the Go game has been played for hundreds of years, still such new patterns are found. It is one of the interesting things of Go. There are more strange ones which some professional players are trying such as the one shown in the second picture “Black Hole”, “Southern Cross” or “Fortress”. The left is a normal wooden board and the right was made with marble texture by a player and designer Dawn in the SIM managed by Evan, also a Go player.

After all I prefer a wooden one with black and white stones. I think Go is the most beautiful game in the world, with very simple rules and materials. White and black are different in size, white 21.9mm and black 22.2mm. It is said that white looks larger than black. Also, the grid is not square, longitudinal 23.9mm, transversal 22.2mm. The depth is longer since the board will be looked at an angle. It may not be necessary for computer games or in SL since it can be looked down straight. The oblong grid started at Edo era and the national treasure is much older than that. Put aside such a trivia, let us play a game!

Let's play GO!

The SIM for GO game was closed finally. A friend taught me several places for the game. This seems to be the designated successor of Kido with the same atmosphere smaller in scale.

This is a game spot in Soyokaze SIM. There are several tables ready for games.

No one can tell that this hut is for Go game if not taught before.
http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Epirrita/163/21/134

There are two GO game sets ready. The fluorescent light tube on the ceiling provides a strange reality. Sad to say there is no players in the above places. If anyone could play with me, please leave a note or IM for Temi Sirbu.

Farewell Kido

Another famous SIM will be going a fade. The Go club where I visited many times.

The vast room where go-tournaments were held has been cleared.

I came here two years ago, and met more than 50 peoples. From beginners, 15K, to 5D, I played total 75 games with 29 persons. Six out of them were stronger than me. I may be about 1D. K means Kyu, D for Dan in Japan but they say the level is higher than Japanese ones. I played with computer game “Silver Star” that claims 6-Dan and I win with 5 stones but close with 4 stones, so my 1D will be appropriate.

Not only for Go, there are beautiful Japanese-style surroundings. There is a cozy space like that at old Edo SIMs where I lived before. Thank you Silent Ying for preparing such a good SIM!

There is few facilities other than those for Go, but this is a Zen or Yoga pose. The snowy mountains on the back also has a Go club.

The whole SIM from the top of mountains. All houses with tiled roof are Go clubs. The whole SIM was used solely for Go. There are several spots where we can play Go other than this SIM, but they are smaller and few players coming. If you are interested in Go game, please visit the followings or send me IM. My available time zone is around 17:00~23:00 SLT on weekdays.

Let's play Go 3

I visited Kido Go Club several times but seldom found a player. If anyone would play Go with me, please leave IM or note card to Temi Sirbu. I can read them while I am off-line. My available time zone is around 17:00~23:00 SLT on weekdays. I do not have any official handicap but according to experience my level will be around 1k or 1D. I could play with any size of board or handicap. Please play with me.
Kido Go Club: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Kido%20Province/165/128/22/

The below is an example of my game with a free soft named “cosumi”. It is said that the level is about 8k. The computer put four stones. I just played A to capture the black right below, and computer played B to guard his land. But I should be careful since the computer tends to give up stones easily but also is good at pretending to be dead. The stones right below could be able to escape.
Cosumi: http://www.cosumi.net/play.html

The middle game. White attacked stones on right side and black abandoned the right side and played A to secure his area on the left. I invaded it and escaped to right by sacrificing several stones. White won as a result. In hindsight it could be possible to attack black stones on the right above. After several games, I studied the way of the computer and won with seven stones but lost with eight. So please measure my level ^-^

Let's play Go 2

I have been visiting the site every day but seldom found a player. Mizuki kindly played with me. Many friends came to watch the game.

To people who does not know what Go is, here is my interpretation. Many people knows that Go is to enclose as large area as possible. The above is the first game I won in SL. You can see there is a huge white plaza right below.
The area is made by building walls made by a series of stones, but both players put a stone alternatively, so the wall cannot be made at a time. You should put stakes (stones) one by one. A single stake cannot claim an area, so it is important to arrange stakes properly.

One of observers asked whether it is possible to build an area for black in the white area right below. Generally it is possible to secure own area within the enemy’s area, but since the play is alternate, it is hard to build a new wall herefrom within an established area like the above. The stake is piled alternatively trying to build border lines, but also it is a tactic to set a stake close to that of opponents to block up, or to pull out it by surrounding opponent’s stakes. In order to protect stakes from pull-out (killed), it is necessary to build a house with at least two rooms (eyes) inside. In the above case, the left above harf had been Black area, but White extended branch into the Black area through gaps on the wall. There is no gap on White wall. How to set stakes appropriately at the beginning is called Fuseki (stepping stones), and typical way to negotiate opponents stakes is called Joseki (set sequence). Rules of Go are very simple but how to win is so difficult that computers still cannot find the answer. That is why Go is interesting though.

Additional note on 2018/7/21. Later stronger softs based on AI came in and defeated human players. A soft that I have is about 6-Dan level and I need three stones to compete against it, so my level could be about 3-Dan. Please call me if you are interested in a game!

If you do not see where to start in the game board that is too wide, there is a mini-game using 9 by 9 board. It can be done within a short period.

On the last Sunday a tournament was held. It was started 3:00am in Japan time, so I was not able to attend but took some pictures at the end of the tournament. Boards of 15 by 15 were used this time. Regular board is 19 by 19.

Let's play Go!

The Go club again. There are many cool game rooms provided here.
Kido Go Club: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Kido%20Province/165/128/22/

Birds eye view of the SIM. The full SIM are used only for the go club. All buildings with tiled roof are the game rooms.

There are various settings at the mountain, seashore, and lakefront. This one may be Zen sitting meditation in front of a stone garden. Go game that allows to put white and black stones freely on a large game board is more beautiful than Reversi. Go may have something in common with Japanese garden?

Notice plate at the game room. Looking on the Net, The Ten Commandments of Go is famous in Go world.

1 Do not be greedy.
2 Intrude appropriately slow.
3 Attack while taking care of self.
4 Sacrifice to get more valuable move.
5 Abandon small and take big.
6 At danger, do sacrifice.
7 Avoid rash decisions.
8 Attack appropriately and timely
9 If opponent is strong, protect self.
10 If isolated, live first.

I thought I could restart Go that I learnt as a child, but it is sad that there is few players. Also in RL none of my friends plays go. If anyone could play Go with me, please send IM to Temi Sirbu.

For some reason or other, there are nude pictures in this room. It could be nice to be able to play without restraint like this. But here someone was advised “You should make up and wear tidy clothes for the respect of your opponent.” So it might be better not to wear T-shirt or Levis^-^

Go club

From The world of Yana, a beautiful page which is introducing many beautiful spots in SL, visited Kido Go Club.
Kido Go Club: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Kido%20Province/165/128/22/

Not only Go game boards, there are many cool game rooms with beautiful surroundings. This one is at the top of mountain, open air room with falling snow. It could be too cool in RL but this is one of the good settings only possible in SL.

There are more than ten game spots mostly as a private room, but this one has five tables. Is this a lesson room?

There were players from China and Russia. They seemed to be excellent players and I was not able to stop watching. When I was a child my father naggingly taught me Go, but there was no person to play with and I have not played since then. I asked a Chinese player to play with me and he said I have some aptitude. Shall I start learning again…
